[photo of Lane Trotter]It is my great pleasure to announce that Lane D. Trotter will be Fanshawe's new Senior Vice-President, Academic. After a very thorough hiring process, Lane has accepted our offer to assume this vital role at the College, and will formally join us on February 23, 2009.

Lane comes to us from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) - a Burnaby-based polytechnic institution that serves over 16,000 full-time and 32,000 part-time students every year. Lane was most recently Dean of the School of Transportation, providing educational leadership for the Aerospace, Marine, and Motive Power divisions, as well as the Trades Access and the Technology Management degree departments.

Under Lane's leadership, BCIT's School of Transportation achieved international recognition and accreditation for the Aerospace and Marine programs, and developed a broad array of educational and industry partnerships. His experience in building those partnerships, as well as developing degree programs, will be a major asset as we move forward with our own plans to add new learning opportunities at Fanshawe.

In addition to his work at BCIT, Lane has extensive academic leadership experience including positions held in the mid to late nineties with the B.C. Ministry of Education and at St. Clair College in Windsor, as Dean of three major areas.

Throughout his career, Lane has demonstrated impressive initiative and the ability to collaborate. He recently managed a team that developed the education and business plans for BCIT's $77 million state-of-the-art Aerospace Technology Campus. He is a former member of the Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council's Board of Directors, and past Chair of the Committee on National Standards for Applied Science and Engineering Technicians. He has also been published in academic journals in the area of governance and accountability.

Lane holds both an undergraduate and a graduate degree from the University of Victoria and is working on his doctorate through Simon Fraser University.

I know you will join me in welcoming Lane and his family to our community.
