London Cereal Drive

This is one person who does not clown around when it comes to thinking of ways to help the London Food Bank. Dave Mote (Human Services Foundation (HSF) grad, 2007) challenged his first year SSW classmates to donate 100 boxes of cereal. When they met the challenge Dave dressed up (and we mean UP, he's 6'6" tall!) as a clown on Halloween at school.

"Change for a Change" - Merrymount Children's Centre

With Christmas only two weeks away, the Social Service Worker class was looking for someone who might need help.

A speaker from Merrymount Children's Centre inspired Marcy Young (in photo at right, holding cheque) to recruit her classmates to collect pocket change to help provide much needed socks and underwear for many of the children at the centre. In just nine days from start to finish, they raised $713.71. Many were involved in the collection, sorting and rolling of this change, which they presented to Merrymount staff member Rose Naswetter (in photo at left, holding cheque) in the form of a giant cheque.

Special thanks to Dayra Bello, Richard McDonaugh, Dave Mote, Barb Thomas (HSF), Lesley Redman, Allison Parke-Rye and Jody Watson.

Wraparound Raffle for Rachel

[photo of fundraiser]Winter term was snowy and miserable, but yet again the first year SSW students found a reason to help others in London. Presented with the plight of 18-month-old Rachel, a girl with an extremely rare heart condition who requires extensive medical testing in Ottawa, the class again rallied to the cause.

Led by Michelle Grubb and Marcy Young, they were able to raise $554.94 by raffling items such as Tim Horton's mugs, gift certificates and ornamental plates, as well as a 50/50 draw. Many thanks to the Fanshawe community, staff and students for purchasing tickets.
