Mighty Falcon Dancers Need Your Support

August 22, 2008
Fanshawe's Mighty Falcon Dancers are entering their third year of dazzling performance and they need your support more than ever. Not only does the team cheer on the Falcons at all home games, they compete in dance competitions across the province and perform at events throughout the city, contributing all the while to the spirit and enthusiasm of the occasion.

The Squad is a group of 20 to 24 students who use dance to express their Fanshawe fervor. Combining hip hop, breaking, popping and jazz, choreography is continually changing to reflect current dance trends and keep things fresh. "We always have an outstanding group of individuals who are not only talented but support each other through the stresses of school," says team manager Rubelyn Ubando, who has been the team's manager since its inception.

"It's a great way for students to get involved," adds Lauren Walton, VP Athletics and team coordinator. "It's good for school spirit and it teaches responsibility and real-world skills just like any other sport."

It is no small commitment to be a member of the team as dancers practise twice weekly on top of their home game cheering, dance competitions, benefits and events throughout the year. "We've been looking into performing at high schools to create hype," adds Ubando. "It'd be great to promote the club within the community and to prospective students."

Through the glitter and glam, you'd never know the Mighty Falcon Dancers are in need of funding. Events incur various costs including new uniforms: "Many students can't afford much after the cost of tuition, books and living expenses," explains Ubando.  "We need to help our team out as much as possible so they can concentrate on their performance, not how they will fund their uniform or whether the team has enough money to compete."

If you're interested in sponsorship or know of companies, small businesses or sports stores looking to sponsor a team, please contact Rubelyn Ubando at rubando@fanshawec.ca.

Catch the Mighty Falcon Dance Squad at home games starting the beginning of October. And if you like what you see and want the Squad to dance at your event, contact Ubando for more information.
