Pandemic Update H1N1 Influenza A (Swine Flu)

June 12, 2009

On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the pandemic alert level from Phase 5 to Phase 6, declaring an influenza pandemic. This declaration was based on the fact that the new H1N1 influenza virus has spread worldwide; it does not, however, indicate a change to the local situation, the severity of the virus or the current response.

Fanshawe College's Health and Safety Services continues to monitor the H1N1 Influenza, following our Pandemic Plan and working directly with local health officials.

College operations are continuing as normal. We ask that students and employees continue to be highly vigilant about hand washing and cough/sneeze etiquette. See www.fightflu.ca/prot-eng.html for details.

Employees or students exhibiting flu-like symptoms are advised to stay home and seek medical advice immediately such as contacting their doctor or Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.

Medical questions can also be referred to the College's Occupational Health Nurses (OHN), either Olive Murray or Margaret Schwartz at 519-452-4430 ext. 4132.
