Project Summary
When JC Green, a privately owned licensed producer of medicinal and recreational cannabis in Thorndale, Ontario, faced challenges with its product quality and processes, they came to Fanshawe College’s Centre for Research and Innovation (CRI) for help.
Project Challenge
JC Green needed support optimizing their hydrocarbon extraction and wiped film distillation systems in order to improve yield and quality of the final product.

The Solution
The project was completed both onsite at JC Green’s facility, so the research team (including two Fanshawe student research assistants) could gain familiarity with their equipment and processes, and at the Centre for Applied Research and Innovation in Biotechnology (CARIB) laboratory, the arm of CRI that focuses on industry-led research in food science and cannabis processing, among other areas. The lab’s state-of-the-art equipment enabled them to improve JC Green’s processes and the viability of their products while realizing their business goals. The CARIB labs’ unique capability of having a cannabis research license was instrumental in this project.
Fanshawe faculty and student research assistants reviewed systems and technical challenges with JC Green to optimize operational parameters. They characterized the extraction and distillation products to produced standard operating procedures for the newly refined processes.
