Since 2017, Dundas And Sons has been a London, Ontario microbrewery and taproom that also offers live music and local artist exhibitions.
Project Summary
As a sole proprietor, Bob Dundas faced many struggles. He was unaware of specific regulatory requirements and, like many businesses, struggled to find and retain qualified staff, especially during COVID. After a referral to Fanshawe, we helped find suitable candidates for employment, paid for relevant training, and established several funded training placements.
The Challenge
Operating a business alone is a challenge for any new owner. And trying to find the right staff, train them, and keep them proved complicated. Early on, only a few bartenders worked alongside the owner, but Bob was committed to growing his company. That meant hiring more people so he could work fewer hours.
Plus, Bob had gone into the business “blind.” Bob was learning about the various regulations with this type of business as he went along, and knew if he didn’t get it right, he could have a rude awakening.
Working with Fanshawe is like having my own HR team behind me. It takes away the financial burden and risk of hiring new staff and has given me a huge leg up! They cover wages for a couple of months and provide training, so they’re ready to go, and I know they’ll work out. By the time I’m paying them with my own money, they’re on their feet and running.
The Solution
Working together, the Fanshawe team learned what the business needed regarding staff, relevant training, and support. This has reduced the financial burden of training and hiring new staff and enabled workers to be successful in their positions.
Bob also found it nice to have third-party check-ins on staff placements and his regulatory requirements to ensure he was doing everything right.
