Project Summary
The training project brought 47 Brazilian primary and secondary education teachers to Canada from May 25 to July 21, 2023. The program, financed by CAPES, focused on improving teaching methodologies and providing immersive learning experiences. This project was managed by Colleges and Institutes Canada in partnership with Niagara College.
The Challenge
Brazilian educators face challenges in adapting to modern teaching methodologies and integrating technology into their classrooms. There is also a need for professional development opportunities that offer practical, hands-on experiences. Additionally, understanding and implementing inclusive classroom practices is crucial for fostering an equitable learning environment.
Testimonial
We had an amazing two-month experience at Fanshawe. The team welcomed us warmly and made us feel right at home. The on-campus accommodation was peaceful and pleasant. We had extraordinary and highly prepared instructors; they were well accustomed to working with refugees and immigrants, and it left a lasting impression on us. The experiential opportunities, including seeing student-focused education, project-based learning, competency development and the nurturing classroom environment in practice was enlightening.
The Solution
The eight-week training program was designed to address these challenges comprehensively. It included two weeks of English as a Second Language (ESL) training, followed by two weeks of experiential learning through visits to nurseries, primary and secondary schools in London, the London Public Library, and participation in an Online Open Forum. The remaining four weeks focused on training in teaching methodologies, covering topics such as student-centered approaches, technology in the classroom, the Canadian education system, inclusive classroom practices and classroom management. The program also incorporated recreational activities, including trips to Toronto and Niagara Falls, and outdoor activities in various parks around London.
