Project Summary

In partnership with Northern Lights College, Project B11 - Mexico aimed to improve student success by identifying dropout causes and developing supportive strategies. The project also enhanced employability and labour market integration, particularly in the extractive sector in Campeche and Durango. This project was funded by Global Affairs Canada and managed by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan.)

The Challenge

The primary challenge was the high dropout rate among students, which hindered their academic and professional progress. Additionally, there was a need to improve the employability of graduates and ensure their smooth transition into the labour market. The extractive sector in Campeche and Durango required a tailored approach to meet its specific needs, necessitating a comprehensive review of existing processes and services.

The inclusion program started by working with people with disabilities, and then we opened it up to all other so-called vulnerable groups. So now we no longer see inclusion as just one side of the issue, but as an integral part of it.

- Jesús Omar Márquez Solís

The Solution

The project implemented 11 strategic initiatives to address dropout rates and enhance employability. Key outcomes included developing mentoring and peer tutoring programs, training 46 teachers in Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and establishing early warning systems to support at-risk students. Mental health and gender inclusion workshops engaged over 100 participants, fostering a more supportive and equitable learning environment.

Efforts also included creating strategic alliances and action plans to boost enrolment, providing tailored training for the extractive sector, and continuing graduate follow-up initiatives. Communities of Practice and targeted teacher training sessions enhanced collaboration and teaching effectiveness. Together, these activities have improved retention, promoted inclusion, and strengthened student readiness for the labor market, particularly in Campeche and Durango’s extractive sector.
