What does it mean to truly see in a world oversaturated with images?
BEHOLDER, an art exhibition from Fanshawe Fine Art students, considers this question through looking.
Seventeen second-year students used images borrowed from the London Public Library to create their paintings. Amplifying the experience of looking, their artwork forces viewers to step closer and decode the relationships between elements – such as control and chaos, intention and accident – to become the beholder.
“These paintings challenge us to question what is borrowed, what is invented and what emerges in the space in between,” said professor Billy Bert Young. “In reconfiguring visual fragments, the artists construct new worlds that demand to be seen.”
In addition, visitors to the exhibition will see various techniques used by artists to create their work, including masking, glazing and texture building.
The exhibition runs until March 22, 2025, at the Tap Centre for Creativity in downtown London.
