On Friday, May 24, Fanshawe College signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with 31 Canadian Brigade Group, an Army Reserve Formation of the 4th Canadian Division that is headquartered in London.

This MOU will provide a co-operative education program through the delivery of military training starting in the fall of 2024. Fanshawe students will have an opportunity to receive co-operative education credits while receiving basic military qualifications and condensed military occupational training that aligns with their academic areas of study. This partnership will also give students the opportunity to continue with the reserves after their co-op work term in a part-time role, which will provide them with important and relevant job experience.

This is the first-ever agreement in Canada for a co-operative education program with the Canadian Armed Forces for post-secondary students.

The agreement was signed by Fanshawe President Peter Devlin and Colonel Chris Brown, commander of 31 Canadian Brigade Group.

“This partnership highlights to our students that the benefit of service to Canada will not impact their educational goals,” says Fanshawe President Peter Devlin. "Fanshawe has a strong focus on innovation and collaboration, and the signing of this memorandum of understanding reflects that. Our students will be applying both their Fanshawe academic learning and their military learning during their co-op work term.”

“Fanshawe College and 31 Canadian Brigade Group in London, Ontario have embarked on a co-op partnership which builds upon the history of both institutions, orienting greater future opportunities for student and military success,” says Colonel Chris Brown, Commander, 31 Canadian Brigade Group. “By forging new and innovative pathways to learn new skills in real-world applications, this initiative harnesses the military’s continuous learning philosophy with the academic backbone provided from Fanshawe College. Building future leaders is the core of both institutions and building them together, in partnership, is a pathway to success.”
