Review and Sign Your Contract

Your contract includes the following information:

  • Your professor category and the number of hours of teaching you will have per week
  • The name and contact information of your hiring (academic) manager and other key contacts in the School/Campus you will be teaching in
  • The course(s) you will be teaching (for non-full-time faculty)

If you have any questions about your pay, contact your hiring manager or e-mail payrollhr@fanshawec.ca.

Using Your Fanshawe Login and Username

Once your contract is processed (in about 48 hours), you'll get an email with your Fanshawe employee details and instructions to access all College electronic services using your provided username and password. These are Fanshawe’s four main systems where faculty will use this login and password:

The myFanshawe portal is a Microsoft SharePoint site that connects you with the College information, news, resources, and services, including FanshaweOnline, FanshaweLearns, and WebAdvisor (login required). It is the default homepage for all college web browsers.

FanshaweOnline (FOL) is the College’s learning management system, which you will use to deliver course content and communicate with your students.

FanshaweLearns is the College’s employee learning system where you can browse, search, and register for internal training and development opportunities.

WebAdvisor is where you will find your pay advices/earning statements and access your class schedule/timetable, and report students’ official grades.

Your username will also be incorporated into your new Fanshawe College email addresses:

  • username@fansaweonline.ca
This address is to be used exclusively for communication with students. This account is accessed through the learning management system, FanshaweOnline or FOL, at https://www.fanshaweonline.ca/.
  • username@fanshawec.ca
This address is for non-student correspondence within the College (e.g., with other faculty, managers, service departments; for completing employee training). This account is accessed through Microsoft Outlook Online or on any device with the Microsoft Outlook app.

Your Fanshawe ID Card

Follow myPhoto site instructions to upload your photo for your employee card (login needed). In Step 2, select ‘F) College Staff’ and complete the process. Collect processed cards from room E2020 at 1001 Fanshawe College Blvd campus. Email cards@fanshawec.ca for card delivery to another campus.

If you have any questions about your employee ID card or how to obtain it, contact cards@fanshawec.ca.

After you have your Fanshawe ID card, contact your hiring manager or your School to have your card programmed to access the offices and rooms you will need to enter on campus, as many areas of the college require a card swipe for access.

Orientation and Training

All new faculty may receive school-specific orientation introducing them to the office space, team contacts, workstations, policies, and resources uniquely available to them. However, the college also mandates training for new faculty depending on their category.

Orientation for Non-Full-Time Faculty

New non-full-time faculty undergo Orientation to College Teaching (OCT) at semester start. This program covers teaching strategies, FanshaweOnline, and available support services. After signing your contract, you'll receive an email to register using your personal address. OCT involves synchronous and asynchronous sessions, allowing in-person or online attendance, aligning with your course delivery method. Upon completing both sessions (10 hours total), a $250 stipend is provided.

Orientation for Full-Time Faculty

New full-time faculty begin with a one-day Fanshawe orientation followed by a three-day College Educator Development Program (CEDP) session. Fanshawe orientation covers professorial duties, workload formulas, benefits, and available support services. CEDP spans two years with three residential phases at Fanshawe, focusing on curriculum, evaluation, tech-integrated teaching, and skill development in a supportive setting. Emails to your personal and @fanshawec.ca addresses will detail orientation and CEDP Phase 1 in mid-August and provide CEDP registration in mid-July.

Standard Training Modules

Completion of this training is done through FanshaweLearns, and is a mandatory condition of your employment. When you log in relevant training modules will already be assigned to you, listed by due date. Some schools may require additional modules.

Your Campus: In Person and Online

Arriving on Campus

Fanshawe’s campuses are located throughout Southwestern Ontario. In this section, you’ll learn how to get to each of these campuses and where to park if you are driving to campus. Visit the Fanshawe College website to learn more about each of our campus locations.

Note that while most of the campus locations have free parking, the London Campus and Y and Z buildings require a parking pass or metered parking.

Preparing to Teach

01
Access Your Class Schedule or Timetable

Your class schedule or timetable is available online through WebAdvisor under the ‘Faculty’ menu (login required). You can choose to view your ‘Faculty Class Schedule’ as a ‘List’ or a ‘Grid Layout’.

The class schedule includes the following details:

  • the course(s) you are teaching (course code and course title)
  • the start and end date for the semester and for each course
  • the number of hours per week for each course
  • the days/times for each class
  • the delivery location (a room number or online delivery)

All classes start on time and end 10 minutes before the end-time indicated on the schedule to allow for students and faculty to have a short break and to travel between classes.

02
Understanding Delivery Models and Formats

At Fanshawe, all credit courses have an FOL Course. The delivery model for the course will determine FOL usage includes content posting, tools, and engagement methods. Courses adopt three models:

  • Face-to-face (web-enhanced): In-person classes with added online materials.
  • Blended: Combines in-person and online coursework, discussions, projects.
  • Online: Primarily web-based with limited face-to-face sessions.

Online or blended courses can be synchronous (real-time via Zoom or etc.) or asynchronous (intermittent interaction with pre-recorded content or digital tools). Your class schedule should state the course's delivery method, but if this is unclear, you should discuss with your academic manager.

03
Review Your Course Outline and Course Plan

These two documents summarize the outcomes, i.e., the things that are taught and evaluated as part of your course. The course outline is a carefully-aligned contract between students and the institution which professors must adhere to. Accompanying it, the course plan more specifically details topics, prep, resources, and evaluations weekly.

Both of these documents are made available to you and all students in FOL. To locate them,

  1. Log into FOL with your Fanshawe username and password.
  2. Click on the course you are teaching under My Courses on the FOL home page.
  3. Click on the ‘Content’ menu option.
  4. Click on ‘Course Outline’ at the top of the list of contents in the side bar menu. Both the course outline and the course plan documents can be reviewed, saved, and printed from here.
04
Gather Course Resources

Consult your course outline, course plan, and class schedule to determine necessary resources:

  • The course outline lists required learning materials for both you and your students, while the course plan details when these resources are utilized.
  • Your class schedule specifies the teaching environment, influencing the resources needed (e.g., online, classroom, lab).

This section offers general guidance on available free software, accounts, and obtaining textbooks. Further instructions on acquiring technical software, equipment, and materials will be covered in your School/Campus-specific onboarding.

Free Software and Accounts

Students and faculty at Fanshawe have access to many software tools. Visit CONNECTED Fanshawe to check out the many offerings.

For technical support with these products and accounts, contact the IT Service Desk .

Textbooks and Instructor Resources

Textbooks often offer various resources for instructors, including teaching materials (like presentations or lab guides), multimedia elements (e.g., videos, diagrams), and evaluation tools (such as question banks). Use these as a foundation while creating your teaching materials and evaluations. Check with your academic manager or program coordinator to see if there's already a copy available for instructors.

05
Set Up Your FOL Course

As part of your orientation, you will complete FOL Essentials training that will introduce you to many of the key features and functions you will use in FOL. Many faculty members will go beyond these standards, but the elements described on pages 6 & 7 of the A115 policy document are the minimum expectation for all courses

Additional FOL workshops and training sessions are offered regularly on topics including communication tools, evaluation tools, and grading. Your school may have resources or contacts to guide you through this process, but you can also use tutorials or workshops hosted through FanshaweLearns to achieve this goal. For your quick reference:
