Report an Absence/Cancel a Class

If you need to reschedule or cancel a class due to a planned absence, illness, or emergency, follow the reporting procedures for your School/Campus, and notify your students via FOL (e-mail and/or announcement) as soon as reasonably possible. Full-time faculty also need to record their absences in the Fanshawe One (Workday) system (login required).

Help a Student in Distress

If you are concerned about a student's well-being or you would like advice on how to approach/support a student who is struggling, contact Counselling and Accessibility Services. This department offers consultation and advice on common student-related issues for faculty/staff who are unsure of how to best support a student in need.

Call 519-452-4282 to book a faculty/staff consultation. When you call, identify yourself as a Fanshawe employee looking for guidance on a student-related issue. Confidential counselling services can be delivered by secure video conference or over the phone.

As part of Fanshawe’s Mental Health Strategy, Counselling and Accessibility Services has developed a faculty toolkit with the goal of partnering with academic staff to support student mental health throughout the academic year. Early intervention is key to supporting someone struggling with mental health concerns. The faculty toolkit provides much more detail on these processes and services, and is available on the myFanshawe portal: Helping a Student in Distress (login required).

Report an Issue with a Classroom

Although it’s best to scout your classroom space and equipment before the semester starts, everything doesn’t always work according to plan – and plans can change. If the arrangement or size of your classroom isn’t suitable for the class, or you need a different kind of room for a test or activity, contact the Academic Planner for your School or Campus. If there is an issue with your classroom (e.g., health and safety concerns, the room is too cold or too hot, too noisy, something is broken, chairs are missing, ceiling leaking, etc.), contact the Security Control Centre through email at SecurityControlcntr@fanshawec.ca or call the non-emergency line at 519-452-4400 to see if the issue can be resolved quickly.

Health and Safety Concerns

Fanshawe College is committed to providing a safe and healthy work and learning environment for its employees, students, visitors, clients and contractors. If you encounter any student issues, unexpected situations, or any other issue requiring additional guidance, consult with your Program Coordinator or academic manager. In the event of any difficulties or conflicts with students, you should document the precise details of any situations/incidents in writing as soon as possible. In an instance where you or a student is injured or has a near miss, you are required to report this incident to the college using the incident report form using the process documented on the Report an Incident page.

Employees logged into a College workstation (including podiums) are able to send requests to Campus Security for urgent assistance by clicking on the green square with an exclamation point in a white triangle icon located on the system tray (bottom toolbar) of their PC. To use the notification alert in an emergency, TRIPLE CLICK the icon and a notification will be sent to Campus Security Services to let them know you require immediate assistance. You will see a message confirming that “Security has been notified.” You can also call Campus Security Services emergency line at 519-452-4242.

Inclement Weather and College Closures

In the rare case that the college closes or restricts operations due to poor weather conditions, e.g., heavy snowfall or blizzard, the closure will be communicated over several channels including prominent messaging on the main website (www.fanshawec.ca), email, and announcements over social media and local radio. Best efforts are made to make these announcements by 7:00 am. Closures may be not applied equally for all campus locations.

Other Campus Emergencies

For any other emergencies, Fanshawe's Emergency Management Office (EMO) has created campus-specific Emergency Guidelines for all Fanshawe College owned buildings. This, and other health, safety, and health information is available to employees through MyFanshawe (login required):
