Students from across Fanshawe’s Faculty of Creative Industries are collaborating on an expanded five-day virtual UNBOUND showcase, beginning Monday, April 19, 2021, to highlight the final collections of 19 soon-to-be graduates of the Fashion Design program.

UNBOUND 2021 Fashion Week, led by students in the Fashion Design program and supported by peers from Visual Effects and Editing, Business, Fashion Marketing and Management, Broadcasting – Television, Music Industry Arts and Photography, will break away from a traditional runway experience to include a fashion photoshoot, digital magazine, creative content to share across social platforms and a short fashion film.

“This capstone show is an incredible opportunity for Fashion Design students to collaborate with their peers in the creative industries to showcase their sustainable collections and portfolios,” says professor and Unbound show co-ordinator, Loren Carriere. “It’s a fantastic learning opportunity as students are guided through the steps required to plan and organize a successful fashion event including marketing, fittings, show styling, staging, music, budget, event preparation, execution and evaluation.”

The theme of this year’s show is Descience, a global collective of creative minds developing powerful ideas in which scientific discovery offers inspiration for the innovative minds of fashion designers. The influence of Descience has given designers and scientists the opportunity to bring about meaningful objectives and to curate solutions in an effort to move our world into one of innovation, technology and global resolutions. Unbound designers have incorporated Descience into their collections through machine quilting embroidery, laser-cutting, 3-D printing, LED lights, reactive inks and more.

“My experience during this program has helped me in many ways. I’ve expanded my creativity, gained confidence and built amazing relationships throughout the programs. Doing my final collection has been an opportunity to measure myself as a designer and a person, finding ways to source and reach people with different abilities to help me during the process,” says Vanessa Romano-Coronado, a third-year Fashion Design student. “With COVID-19, staying at home has created challenges in the way that I schedule myself to accomplish my deadlines and find creative ways to use spaces that were not meant to be a studio.”
