Frequently Asked Questions
This Q&A is designed to help prospective and current students better understand the recent program suspension decisions at Fanshawe College.
How many programs are being suspended/cut?
The College has made the difficult decision to permanently suspend nine programs as part of the College's ongoing review of program health and viability. The suspensions will be implemented for fall 2026. These suspensions follow the College's decision to suspend 10 programs late last year and the 40 programs announced last spring.
Why were these programs chosen?
We assess the viability of all programs by considering enrolment over time, labour market needs and financial sustainability. These assessments are ongoing to ensure we continue delivering high-quality education where it's needed most. Even with high enrolment, some in-demand programs are being suspended because they operate at a significant deficit. Wherever possible, applicants to these programs will be offered alternatives.
What happens to the current students enrolled in these programs?
All students currently enrolled in affected programs will have the opportunity to complete and graduate from their program with the same quality of education and support they expected when they chose to study at Fanshawe. However, no new students will be admitted to these programs.
Will these programs be offered in the future?
We don't anticipate offering these programs in the future. We are always exploring new program development that meet future labour market needs and ensure financial viability of those programs.
Will additional programs be added to the suspension list? If so, when?
Our assessments are ongoing to ensure our programs remain financially viable and meet student and employer needs.
Is there a chance the College could change course/opt not to suspend any of these programs?
No, these decisions are final.
Why is Fanshawe making this decision?
Fanshawe must address a growing deficit due in part, to the continued decline in international enrolments. Overall, full-time term enrolment is expected to drop by 18 per cent for the 2026/27 academic year (from 42,946 to 35,233). Due to the financial realities facing the College, we are unable to maintain programs that operate at a significant deficit or are no longer aligned with student and labour market needs. While these decisions are difficult, they are necessary to ensure we can continue delivering high-quality education where it's needed most.
Why are you suspending an in-demand program like dental assisting?
Even with high enrolment, some in-demand programs are being suspended because they operate at a significant deficit. This is due to an imbalance between the cost to operate the program, including equipment, and the tuition that is brought in. Wherever possible, applicants to these programs will be offered alternatives. We will explore the ability to increase the Dental Hygiene enrolment as a result of suspending Dental Assisting, using the freed-up capacity in the oral health clinic lab, pending consultation with the accrediting body.
The Ontario Government recently announced $6.4 billion in funding for the post-secondary sector – did this not help?
While the Government of Ontario's recently announced $6.4 billion in funding for the post-secondary sector recognizes the important role colleges play in supporting Ontario's workforce and economy, difficult decisions are still required to ensure long-term financial sustainability. Even with this important investment we are unable to maintain programs that operate at a significant deficit or are no longer aligned with student and labour market needs.
What will these cuts mean for the regional campuses in St. Thomas, Woodstock, Simcoe?
We remain committed to the future of our regional campuses and the students and employers who count on us in the communities we serve.
What impact will these cuts have on the College's downtown campus?
We are reviewing our use of space at all our locations but remain committed to our teaching and learning spaces in downtown London.
What is happening with your London South campus?
All academic programs currently offered at our London South campus will be relocated to our London Campus or Simcoe/Norfolk Regional Campus effective September 1. We remain committed to ensuring impacted students whose program continues into the summer semester and beyond will have the opportunity to complete their program.
