Frequently Asked Questions
This Q&A is designed to help prospective and current students better understand the recent program suspension decisions at Fanshawe College.
Why are some programs being suspended?
Fanshawe College conducted a comprehensive review of all academic programs. Based on enrolment trends, labour market demand, financial sustainability and changes to federal international student policies, certain programs will no longer accept new students. These decisions allow the College to refocus resources on areas with higher demand and future growth potential.
What does “suspended” mean?
Programs listed as suspended are not accepting new students and have no confirmed return date. Current students can still complete their program through a teach-out plan, which ensures required courses and support are available.
Will the College reverse the decision to suspend programs?
No. Program suspensions have been endorsed by the Board of Governors and are final. These decisions were made to align academic offerings with student demand, government policy changes and long-term sustainability.
How were decisions made about which programs to suspend?
Each program was reviewed using criteria such as long-term enrolment patterns, labour market alignment, financial viability and post-graduate work permit eligibility.
Will these programs ever return?
There are no immediate plans to relaunch suspended programs. Future program offerings will be reviewed based on changes in demand, industry needs and available resources.
Is Fanshawe College in financial trouble?
No. Fanshawe College remains financially stable. However, Fanshawe is projecting deficits over the next two years due to sector-wide funding challenges and reduced international enrolment. The decision to suspend select programs is one of a number of proactive measures to manage these financial pressures and ensure the College remains strong, sustainable and focused on students and the community for the long term.
How many programs are affected?
A total of 40 programs have been suspended. The full list is available on the College website. No new students will be admitted to these programs starting fall 2025.
Will more programs be suspended?
There are no additional program suspensions planned at this time. However, the College will continue to monitor enrolment trends, labour market demand and provincial funding. Future program changes may be considered if needed to ensure academic relevance and financial sustainability. Any decisions will be communicated with appropriate notice.
What does “teach-out” mean?
A teach out means students currently enrolled in a suspended program will be able to complete their credential. Required courses, faculty support and resources will remain available until the program ends.
Impact on Students
How is Fanshawe supporting current students?
Students currently enrolled in suspended programs will continue to receive full academic support, including access to faculty, required courses and advising. The College is committed to helping every student complete their credential successfully.
Will I still be able to graduate from my program?
Yes. If you are currently enrolled in a suspended program, you will be able to finish and graduate. Fanshawe will offer required courses and support until all current students have completed their program.
What if I need to repeat a course?
If you need to repeat a required course to graduate, Fanshawe will make that course or equivalent available to ensure you can complete your credential. Students should contact their academic advisor to discuss academic progression, options available and timeline for completion.
Can I transfer to another program?
Yes. Students may explore internal transfer options with academic advisors. Credit transfer may be available depending on the program structure and course alignment. You can find your academic advisor and their contact information on our academic support page.
What if my program included a co-op or placement?
All planned co-op terms, placements and field practicums for current students will continue as scheduled. These are part of the teach-out commitment.
Will the program suspension affect my credential’s value?
No. Credentials from suspended programs remain valid, recognized and respected. Students will graduate with the same credential as originally planned.
Admissions and Applications
I applied to a suspended program. What now?
If you applied to a suspended program, you will receive an email notifying you of the program suspension. The recruitment team will contact you to discuss alternate program options and guide you through next steps.
Can I switch my application choice?
Yes. You may change to another Fanshawe program without penalty. The Student Recruitment team will contact you to discuss alternate open programs and can provide instructions on how to adjust your application through www.ontariocolleges.ca.
Will I be able to reapply if the program returns?
Currently, there is no set timeline for reintroducing suspended programs. If that changes, details will be shared on the College website.
What if I wanted to take a break before starting?
If your program is suspended, deferring admission is not possible. Program suspensions are for this fall and Fanshawe will not be admitting students to those programs.
I’ve been accepted to residence. If I applied to a suspended program, will this interfere with my confirmed spot?
Confirmed applicants/accepted for Residence will not lose their residence room, if impacted by a program suspension. The College will align this with any timelines provided to our applicants, to select a new program for fall 2025.
