What is a diploma?

A Fanshawe diploma is a post-secondary program that takes as little as two years to complete and provides you with both theory and hands-on learning opportunities to prepare you for your career. Ontario College Diplomas are recognized educational credentials that equip you with a wide range of knowledge and skills needed to succeed in your chosen career.

An advanced diploma is similar to a diploma in the first two years but takes an additional year of study to gain more in-depth knowledge in a specific field of study. Often, there are pathways from a diploma to an advanced diploma, allowing you to complete both in as few as three years.

How do our diplomas and advanced diplomas work?

What is an Advanced Diploma and how is it different from a Diploma?
  • A regular diploma typically takes two years (four semesters) to complete. At Fanshawe, many diploma programs include co-op options depending on the major you choose.
  • An advanced diploma typically lasts three years (six semesters) and offers comprehensive training and specialized knowledge relevant to your field. Advanced diploma programs often include work placements or co-op terms which provide practical experience and networking opportunities. You can progress to an advanced diploma after completing a regular diploma. Advanced diplomas are ideal for those looking to enter a professional career right after your graduation.
What is the difference between a Diploma and a Certificate?
  • A diploma program usually lasts for two years and provides detailed training for specialized fields.
  • You can complete a certificate program in less than a year. A certificate program focuses on enhancing specific skills and offers practical training for professional growth or to add to qualifications you already have.
What is the difference between a Diploma and a Degree?

A degree is similar to a diploma but typically takes four years to complete. College degrees offer both the hands-on and practical experience colleges are known for as well as the advanced theoretical learning of a degree. Usually, degrees have higher tuition fees than a diploma, advanced diploma or certificate.

What is a Co-op?
  • A co-op diploma program partners students with employers and the college to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations. You'll gain valuable hands-on experience and build a professional network.
  • You'll have access to a co-op consultant and a career services consultant who will assist you in finding co-op positions, applying, and interviewing. All co-op jobs are paid and you typically earn as much as entry-level employees in similar roles. You can learn more about the benefits of co-operative education and how it can advance your career.
  • To understand how your co-op program works, check your program page to see the details for different programs.
