This program meets the Technical Standards and Safety Authorities (TSSA) theoretical and practical curriculum requirements for Gas Technician 3 and Gas Technician 2 qualifications. Following successful completion of this program, students will receive a college certificate and will be eligible to write the TSSA Certification of Qualification exam.Courses

A Gas Technician 3 (G3) Certificate of Qualification is a mandatory pre-requisite for anyone entering the industry as a Gas Technician. To obtain a Gas Technician 3 Certificate of Qualification you must: Complete standardized training, delivered by a Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) accredited training provider such as Fanshawe College, in accordance with the TSSA training profiles and curriculum. Achieve a passing grade of 75% on TSSA theoretical examinations and practical assessment upon completion of Gas Technician 3 course training. Maintain an 80% attendance record throughout the training program. This course is accredited by the TSSA and complies with the training curriculum requirements of the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000. The course will help prepare you for the TSSA theoretical examination and practical assessment for Gas Technician 3 Certification. Module 1 Safety: Protecting Yourself and Others - Learning Objectives It is essential in our trade as Gas Technicians that we familiarize ourselves with potential safety hazards. We must ensure that we are equipped with the necessary tools, equipment, codes, and technical literature required to do our job safely. Module 2 - Fasteners Hand & Power Tools - Learning Objectives Tools make our work easier and safer. All tools, fasteners, and measurement devices are designed with a specific purpose in mind. In our trade, we must be able to identify and understand the purpose of many different types of tools. This module focuses on common fasteners, hand, and power tools. In later modules we will look at specialized tools used for gas piping and electrical measurement. Module 3 - Properties & Safe Handling of Fuel Gases Learning Objectives Before beginning to work with natural gas or propane we must fully understand their properties and characteristics. The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:
1. Apply safety measures in the plant, Jobsite, and vehicle;
2. Use fasteners, hand, and power tools, and electrical measuring and test instruments;
3. Explain properties and characteristics of natural gas and propane to promote safe handling, combustion, and appliance efficiency;
4. Interpret installation codes, acts, and regulations to ensure personal and public safety;
5. Outline basic electrical theory and supply wiring;
6. Interpret technical manuals, specifications, schematics, drawings, and graphics;
7. Apply customer relation skills
8. Install basic piping and tubing systems
9. Identify basic gas appliances and venting procedures
10. Install service and maintain piping/tubing systems greater than 2" and/or supply pressure greater than 1/2" psig;
11. Install service and maintain mechanical and electronic controls on gas appliances less than 400,000 btus;
12. Explain the relationship of a mechanical system within a building envelope;
13. Install service and maintain domestic and non-vented appliances;
14. Install/remove gas meters;
15. Install service and maintain pressure regulators and relief valves;
16. Install service and maintain domestic gas-fired refrigerators;
17. Install service and maintain conversion burners;
18. Install service and maintain water heaters, combo units, and potable water heaters;
19. Install service and maintain warm air heating systems;
20. Install service and maintain gas-fired hydronic heating appliances and accessories which form an integral part of the appliance;
21 Install service and maintain decorative and space-heating appliances;
22. Size, install, inspect and repair venting systems;
23. Install service and maintain forced air add-on devices;
24. Assess duct design, size plenum connection, and tie into an existing duct system;
25. Select an appropriately sized forced warm air heating system.
