| This course will introduce contemporary media students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking. | ||||

| An introduction to news and sports announcing, and newscast lineup skills. Attention will be paid to story selection and the use of audio. Voice development techniques are taught, and students are coached to improve their on-air presentation skills. | ||||

| Learn interview skills and apply critical thinking to become a credible, creative, and compelling storyteller. Students are taught how to form a story pitch with purpose and produce longer-form audio stories and interviews. Emphasis is on fact-based storytelling, verifying information, fairness in coverage, scripting, and editing. | ||||

| Newsroom lab training prepares students to perform the day-to-day duties of a newscaster, reporter, and editor in the College's state-of-the-art Broadcast Centre. Technical training is provided for Adobe Audition and the computer newsroom system. Students learn how to stay on top of current events, develop news contacts, and practice the professional and ethical requirements of a live working newsroom. | ||||

| An introduction to broadcast news writing with emphasis on clear, concise, and conversational storytelling. Students learn how to find story focus, attribute information, be legally fair, and have correct facts and grammar when writing stories and newscasts. | ||||

| The course focuses on the role of journalists to cover racialized and marginalized communities in our diverse society. Students will be educated on the history and rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Unconscious bias is discussed, and how to have inclusive, diverse and equitable representation and perspectives in a range of stories. | ||||

| COMM-3075 | Communications for Media | 3 | ||
| This course, designed for students who plan to work in the field of media, focuses on professional written and verbal communication skills. Students learn to prepare a variety of work-related documents. In addition, students learn about research methods and documentation formats. The principles of effective writing - organization, grammar, style, clarity, and tone - are reinforced throughout the course. The goal of the course is to prepare students for the communication tasks and considerations they will encounter in the media workplace in order to meet the needs of employers and/or the communities they will serve. | ||||

| Students learn about their legal rights and requirements as a journalist. This course covers Canadian law, journalistic ethics, and access to information when gathering and reporting news stories. Students continue to develop and improve their editorial judgement and newscasting skills in this course. | ||||

| Audio production techniques become more advanced and are applied as a reporter, newscaster, and podcaster. The course includes practical newscasting shifts, current events discussions, and lessons on the types of stories a journalist covers. | ||||

| The course advances the craft of interviewing, storytelling, and creative use of sound in the production of podcasts, audio features, and news stories. Students are introduced to industry standards in all aspects of story coverage and current affairs programming. | ||||

| Students advance their broadcast writing skills writing website articles by learning CP Style, the importance of headlines, organizing story content and quotes, and writing with clarity, creativity, and accuracy. Students find news stories and produce them for the CRTC-licenced campus station on-air and online. | ||||
| BRJR-1044 | Multimedia Journalism/Tech Lab | 4 | ||
| An introduction to mobile journalism to learn the practical skills of capturing and editing high quality video, images, and sound for multi-platform storytelling. The student creates multimedia digital content, develops their professional online profile and portfolio, and learns to use social media effectively and responsibly as a journalistic tool. | ||||

| Newscasting skills are developed in a deadline driven multiplatform newsroom. Radio news delivery is evaluated in addition to a clear and concise writing style, accuracy and objectivity, story choices and line-up. Students are also introduced to video news presentation skills. | ||||
| BRJR-3030 | Broadcast Reporting | 4 | ||
| Students gain practical experience as journalists working daily in the 106.9 CIXX-FM newsroom. They gather audio and video while covering the community and report on a wide range of stories. Broadcast stories are produced with emphasis on relevance, quality of sources and interview clips, research and facts, and creative use of sound and imagery. | ||||
| BRJR-3032 | Newsroom Lab & Careers | 6 | ||
| Professional newsroom requirements are emphasized as students apply their practical multimedia skills as newscasters, sportscasters, and reporters. Daily assignment meetings are held requiring story pitches, critical thinking, communication, and accountability. Students also produce a resume and news demo in preparation for internship and career opportunities. | ||||

| Students become podcast hosts and producers. Emphasis is on creative storytelling, compelling content, credible and engaging guests, personality, quality sound, and editing skills. Work produced for the journalism program's podcast extends to multiple platforms for multimedia storytelling. | ||||

| Write and produce news stories for the radio station and its website 1069thex.com. Students apply newswriting and critical thinking skills for story focus and headlines, research, attribution and quotes, clarity, accuracy, correct CP Style, and grammar. | ||||

| Students demonstrate an advanced level of news preparation and presentation as a newscaster on the College's CRTC-licenced radio station CIXX-FM. Personal style is developed for broadcast writing and an engaging news delivery including on-camera performance. | ||||
| BRJR-3035 | Advanced Broadcast Reporting | 3 | ||
| The practical daily reporting experiences of a multimedia broadcast journalist are performed at an advanced level. Quality coverage with depth of content is emphasized with quick turnaround of audio and video news stories to meet audience and broadcast industry expectations | ||||
| BRJR-3036 | Newsroom Lab & Pathways | 4 | ||
| Students function independently and as a team to meet daily professional expectations of a live multi-platform newsroom. They also learn ways to apply their in-demand transferrable journalist and multimedia skills to entrepreneurial opportunities and other pathways. This includes self-employment and freelance, or working in related fields such as public relations, communications, social media, and marketing. | ||||

| Students perform as multimedia multi-platform content creators. Professional expectations for storytelling are expanded as students produce informative and entertaining podcasts, use sound and video for media-rich digital articles, and create effective promotional social posts. | ||||
| BRJR-5003 | Media Internship | 3.6 | ||
| The media internship provides students with 120-150 hours of additional work experience, professional contacts, and feedback. Students can complete the credit with an external media host or in the CIXX-FM newsroom. Internships usually take place during the final month of the final term in partnership with the media company or organization, student, and supervising professors. | ||||

| Students are coached on advanced newswriting techniques to meet industry demands. News articles are produced on tight timelines with emphasis on finding the focus and headline, leading with the latest, depth of content, descriptive writing, readability, keywords, and applying methods to improve audience engagement. | ||||
