This course will focus on best practices in regards to the design of composite components. Students will acquire a fundamental understanding of key design factors, evaluation of load conditions, Design For Manufacturability elements, and of trade-off analysis matrices for optimized selection of material and manufacturing processes. | ||||
MANF-6005 | Fabrication Techniques | 3 | ||
There are many manufacturing techniques employed for the fabrication of components and structures using composite materials. In this course, students will be introduced to a broad range of these techniques, including co-fabrication, infusion processes, wet-bagging and unidirectionals. | ||||

Modern composite material fabrication requires an understanding of many related processes. In this course, students will engage in hands-on activities for pattern design, mould and tool making, and the application of coatings and gel-coats. | ||||

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the secondary processes applied to composite fabrications to convert them into finished products, including trimming, machining, drilling, sanding, adhesive bonding and fasteners. | ||||
MANF-6008 | Repair Methods | 3 | ||
This course instructs students on the importance of quality in composite materials. It will introduce common defects and their causes as well as methods to identify, evaluate, and measure quality and techniques to repair minor defects. | ||||
DESG-6003 | Design Concepts-Adv | 3 | ||
In this course, students are encounter advanced concepts in the design of composite structures. Those concepts include joining techniques, dropping plies, methods to evaluate the state of stress is a designed component, methods to reinforce corners, edge closure methods, and how to use coring materials to selectively increase material stiffness. | ||||

This course provides a comprehensive overview of destructive and nondestructive testing techniques, including ultrasonics, quasistatic and impact testing, acoustic testing, and microscopic evaluation. | ||||
