Introduction to Natural Fiber Dyeing - Micro-credential

This micro-credential provides students with a basic understanding of the features and benefits of natural dyes. In-class lectures will cover quintessential dyes such as weld, marigold, cochineal, pomegranate, and indigo. Students will learn where each dye originated, what it was used for, and how it is used in today's textile environment. Essential dying techniques, safety procedures, and a consistent practice will be highlighted. Students will apply the dyeing techniques they have learned to create a collection of dyed fabric samples, and a finished scarf, that they can take home. Learning Outcomes: 1. Outline the properties of natural dyes as well as their origins and usefulness 2. Practice natural dyeing techniques for both protein and cellulosic fibers 3. Build a library of swatches to reference dye colour, intensity and fastness 4. Create a silk scarf using natural dyeing methods Total class hours - 15
