Practical Elements of Mechanical Engineering-2025/2026

Level 1
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
CADD-6004Eng Drawing & Blueprint Reading2
This course is designed to develop basic skills related to Engineering drawings as used in the manufacturing industry.
CADD-6005CADD Fundamentals1.5
This course is designed to develop basic skills in using AutoCad (2D) and Solidworks (3D) software to create and/or modify engineering drawings for both design and manufacture of mechanical components.
MACH-6005Machining-Intro2
This course will provide an outline of the basic machining processes with an emphasis on machine setup & tooling. Calculations for speed, feed rate, machining times & production cost will present an overall view of production machining.
WELD-6003Welding-Intro2
This course is an introduction to welding processes and designed to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge in: welding shop safety, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungstenarc welding, oxy-fuel and plasma cutting.
MGMT-6182Project Planning3
This course applies Project Management philosophies as used in planning and running an industrial based project. Project Management concepts of risk management, scope statements, timelines, budgets are applied into planning a project. Introduction to basic electrical systems/sensors, and controls as used in industry based projects and as applied on engineering drawings.
ENGR-6004Engineering Design 13.5
This course is an introduction to the design calculations and selection of various machine elements used in power transmission systems. The components included are Belt and Chain Drives, Wire Ropes, Brakes, and Clutches. The design and selection of Springs is also included.
MECH-6009SPC & Metrology3
This course introduces Statistical Quality Control (Statistical Process Control (SPC)) and Metrology. Through theory and practice, statistical analysis and measurement techniques will further develop correct judgement in quality control. Emphasis is given to reliable inspection reports/recommendations either orally or in written form.
MATS-6004Ferrous Metallurgy2
This introduces testing of materials with emphasis on laboratory work. Metallography, hardness testing, tensile testing, impact testing and heat treatment of steels will be introduced. Materials tested will include: plain carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron, aluminum alloys and copper alloys, accurate collection of data with standardized laboratory reports to complete all tests conducted.

Level 2
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
WELD-6004Production Welding3
This course includes the programming, set-up and safely operate the robotic welding cells; Set-up & operate GMAW equipment for spray transfer; Set-up & operate GTAW equipment for welding of aluminum; Perform material preparation for cutting, beveling and cleaning; Apply Jigs & Fixture design and QC inspection techniques; Specify codes, requirements, procedures and costs for welding processes.
MACH-6006CNC Machining3.5
This course will provide the student with manual part programming skills and practical experience on Vertical Machining Center, machine tool processes. Students will learn to write, edit, trouble-shoot and verify their own programs. The practical aspect of the course will provide an opportunity to demonstrate initiative and good time management in addition to working safely and cooperating with fellow students.
ENGR-6005Engineering Design 21
This course is an introduction to dimensioning, guarding, and assembly drawings. Solid works and AutoCAD software will be used in this course.
MECH-6006Industrial Automation4.5
This course introduces industrial automation using programmable logic controllers, hydraulics, and pneumatics. The students learn the use and programming of programmable logic controllers and understand the operation of various sensors used in automation. The operation and calculations related to pressure, forces, flow, and displacements in fluid power systems are covered. Students use software for developing controller programs and develop pneumatic diagrams. Comprehensive laboratory exercises are designed to supplement learning.
METH-6010Technology in Industry3
This course complements the technical learning of both university and college programs with exposure to current manufacturing processes and current quality management concepts.
MECH-6010PEM Capstone Project2
This course allows students in the PEM program to combine their design skills with practical hands-on skills acquired over the previous term, to design and build a project of their choosing, (subject to professor approval). The students will work individually or in teams of 2, to design and manufacture projects, and prepare reports.

Program Residency
Students Must Complete a Minimum of 9 credits in this
program at Fanshawe College to meet the Program Residency
requirement and graduate from this program
