It is designed to teach the student, regardless of program destination, an essential life skill - an understanding of Net Worth, and its importance to business success and the financial well being of the individual.
WRIT-1032Reason & Writing Business 13
This course will introduce business students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.
MKTG-1012Principles of Marketing 13
This course is designed to provide an overview of the decisions that face Marketers in today's fast-paced and competitive business environment. Students will learn that marketing is not only advertising but a broad set of activities designed to satisfy consumer needs and wants. Students examine the information Marketers require for effective decision-making and learn the basic elements of the marketing planning process.

This course provides a review of basic arithmetic and algebra as well as providing students with mathematical tools and concepts needed for other college courses and in future employment. This course is to prepare students for later courses in Marketing, Business, Financial Planning, Accounting, Purchasing and Insurance.
BUSI-1060Strategies for Success1
This course presents and helps to develop some of the skills required to achieve academic and career success. Areas of focus include college resources, study skills, time management, academic integrity, emotional self-awareness and social skills development. Additionally, emphasis is placed on career readiness and preparation.
BUSI-1005Introduction to Business Processes3
This course explores the various functional areas of business in Canada and demonstrates the interrelationship among these areas. Students are introduced to many concepts, including major business trends, the role of government in business, marketing, operations, employee-management issues, financial resources management, business ethics and social responsibility.

This course provides a detailed look at the many sources of retirement income available to Canadians and how individuals can plan for their retirement, considering income needs, alternative savings/retirement income vehicles and taxation issues. The course discusses how the financial planner can provide assistance to clients in retirement planning.
MATH-1057Mathematics of Finance Accounting4
This course explains the time value of money calculations used in Mathematics of Finance. It covers topics such as simple interest, compound interest, annuities-simple and general, bonds, cost-benefit analysis, risk and return calculations and basic statistics.
FINA-1040Consumer Credit3
This course provides students with an in-depth knowledge of consumer and mortgage lending from a lender's perspective. Topics include: the types of credit available to match consumers' needs, the application and assessment process, investigation, documentation and collection methods.
FINA-1053Mutual Funds in Canada4
This is an exciting preparatory course for those seeking to write the mutual funds licensing exam. This course is for students in the related programs but is offered at an introductory level with no prior knowledge required. Knowledge gained will be beneficial in both your personal and professional lives. Successful completion of the external industry exam is, for many employers, a mandatory first step in an investment industry career. Successful candidates will be eligible to provide mutual funds advice and product in Canada. The content very broadly covers the mutual fund investment industry in areas such as regulation, mutual fund mechanics, management styles, advisor requirements, private and public retirement plans and taxation of mutual funds. Students will register through www.IFSE.ca for access to course materials and industry exams.

This course looks at the financial planning profession and role of a financial planner working with clients to make financial decisions and work towards achieving their financial goals. Aspects of measuring personal financial situation, goal-setting. decision-making process, and communication and trust are considered.

ECON-1019Contemporary Issues in Economics3
This is a survey course which introduces students to the structure and function of our economic system. The course will give students a basic understanding of the principles of both micro and macroeconomic activity through modeling and analysis. Students will examine the role that households (consumers), industry (producers) and governments play in a modern economic system and how the decisions by these different levels affect all of our lives. The course is structured to provide insight through lectures, discussions and current events.
ECON-1005Economics 23
This is an introductory macroeconomics course. Students will study measures of macroeconomic activity, growth in the economy and the government's role in stabilizing the economy.

Any Canadian resident who wishes to be licensed to sell securities or advise clients on securities must complete the Canadian Securities Course. FINA3032 has the same content as Volume I of the Canadian Securities Course. Topics include the Canadian investment marketplace, the economy, fixed income securities, equity securities, derivatives, financing and listing securities and corporations and their financial statements.

This course is an introduction to the Canadian insurance industry and is a preparatory course for Provincial licensing requirements, for those who wish to sell Life insurance and other life insurance products in Canada. Topics discussed in this course include various insurance products, such as individual and group life as well as accident and sickness products. Also covered are topics such as underwriting and claims processes, the risk management process, including needs analysis, and legal and professional standards.
COMM-3020Professional Communication3
This course develops students' literacy and professional communication skills. Students focus on current business issues and convey relevant meaning in oral and written format. The main themes of the course include writing reports and other relevant business documents (e.g. letters, short reports); communicating in groups and meetings; awareness of intercultural communication and diverse audiences; the job search (including resumes and cover letters); business; business rhetoric in speaking and writing; summarizing and evaluating current business-related readings; delivering presentations; researching and documenting reports using APA format; and self-editing skills.

This course covers the concepts, skills, and techniques for running effective business meetings and making effective presentations. Course material covered is applicable to all business sectors and audiences of all types and sizes. Emphasis is placed on learning appropriate strategies and multi-media techniques and applying them to individual and group work assignments with business and non-business topics. Students learn to effectively incorporate computer applications like PowerPoint and digital media tools into business meetings and presentations. Students develop life-long strategies for dealing with presentation anxiety and stress. This course will focus on the finance industry.
INNV-1001Innovation Applications3
Organizations and individuals need to be innovative to succeed in the complex and rapidly-changing global marketplace. In this course you will learn the fundamentals of innovation and how innovation applies to your discipline or field.Using this foundational knowledge, you will apply the novel and adaptive thinking processes and tools presented in the course to complete an innovative learning project in collaboration with other students.The project will be based on a real-world scenario with a defined scope as chosen by your professor. The project may involve external live clients and a multi-disciplinary approach.Throughout the course, novel and adaptive thinking skills as well as collaboration skills will be evaluated through self assessment.This course is designed to give students in certificate and diploma programs a foundation in innovative thinking.

This course is an overview of Canadian Business Law with an emphasis on the areas of law most pertinent to employees, managers and agents working in the financial services industry. Course content includes the constitution and court system, alternative dispute resolution, torts, professional liability, contracts, property, family law (marriage vs. common-law, domestic contracts, separation and divorce), human rights, employment law, business formations, security interests and credit, consumer protection, bankruptcy, consumer proposals and debt management plans. Students will become familiar with the industry code of ethics to identify appropriate conduct standards when faced with a wide variety of client circumstances.
FINA-5011Trust & Estate Planning3
This course reviews and discusses the importance of tools such as life insurance, wills, powers of attorney and trusts in estate planning, as well as the preservation and the inter-generational transfer of personal and business assets. This course will show the role risk and estate planning plays in a proper financial plan. You will learn strategies that can be used to transfer assets to beneficiaries in the most efficient manner.
FINA-3041Portfolio Management4
Any Canadian resident who wishes to be licensed to sell securities or advise clients on securities must complete the Canadian Securities Course. FINA 3041 has the same content as Volume II of the Canadian Securities Course and covers investment analysis, security valuation, portfolio development, mutual funds, segregated funds, hedge funds, other managed products, taxation and financial planning.
FINA-3036Comprehensive Financial Plan3
This course will examine financial planning on a more inclusive and comprehensive scale. Comprehensive financial planning involved the process of collecting client information and analyzing that information for the purpose of making recommendations to the client. The 6 areas under examination are 1) Financial Management, 2) Risk Management, 3) Retirement Planning, 4) Tax Planning, 5) Estate Planning, and 6) Asset Management. The intent of this course is not to introduce new topics but rather to tie the analysis together from other courses in the program in order to develop a single financial plan for the client. The six-step financial planning process established by FP Canada as well as the CFP Code of Ethics and CFP Professional Competency Profile will be covered.
MGMT-3059Strategic Client Engagement4
This course introduces students to the principles and application of the sales process. Included in this course are the following topics: prospecting, approach, presentation, close techniques, objection handling, and relationship management. Students are required to execute an effective individual sales presentations, conduct interviews, and complete written proposals and reports.
FINA-5012Tax Planning4
This course looks at the Canadian income tax system as it pertains to individuals. It explores advanced concepts related to personal tax affairs and tax planning strategies.
