This course will offer the student the skills needed to bridge the gap between music theory and its application to current musical environments, both in the recording studio and live performance. This course will also examine a history of popular music in North America in the 20th century, with a focus on those aspects relevant to the development of the commercial music industry in Canada and the U.S. This semester covers the period from the development of early Blues in the American south to the masters of instrumental and vocal styles and current trends including musical theater productions. | ||||

This course will introduce the student to various topics in the music industry with an artist development/management perspective. Topics include income streams for artists as well as contracts and contract negotiations through the study of the manager/artist relationship. The student will also get hands on experience with artist performance and performance critique. | ||||

This course is designed to provide the student with theoretical and practical knowledge of the modern recording studio. Upon completion of this course, each student will be able to properly use microphones, process them through the recording console, utilize various pieces of signal processing equipment and mix in a stereo analog / digital format. | ||||

This course, designed for students who plan to work in the field of media, focuses on professional written and verbal communication skills. Students learn to prepare a variety of work-related documents. In addition, students learn about research methods and documentation formats. The principles of effective writing - organization, grammar, style, clarity, and tone - are reinforced throughout the course. The goal of the course is to prepare students for the communication tasks and considerations they will encounter in the media workplace in order to meet the needs of employers and/or the communities they will serve. | ||||

A practical course designed to equip the student with the highly technical level of aural accuracy required to function in the music industry. The student will develop the ability to assess accuracy of intonation, rhythm, scales and degrees of the scale, intervals, triads and chords, as well as to recognize errors in the reading of music. The student will also be exposed to a wide range of timbres, both acoustic and synthesized. This course also offers an analysis of artists and their production techniques of popular music from 1930-present, with focus on those aspects relevant to the development of the commercial music industry internationally | ||||

Where does the artist fit into the business and how can the Management assure the best use of the Artists talents? Creative, Business and Legal aspects of the relationship will be examined and examples will be discussed to reinforce the knowledge learned in the lectures. Artist's careers will be put under the microscope for good and bad decisions. Various contracts germane to the subject will be presented. The student will also get hands on experience with artist performance and performance critique. A social media component will also be explored. | ||||

This course is an equivalent to Audio Engineering 2 and is open to anyone but is designed to be a section for the women in MIA. With a focus on mixing concepts students will discover the technical ways to bring out the emotion in a recording. | ||||

An audio production course that utilizes audio software, soundware and techniques for use in post production. Diverse sound production is covered through the use of audio, MIDI, virtual instruments, control surfaces and Quicktime video. Hands on applications include sound production, sound design, music creation, editing to picture, and sound effects layback and mixing to picture and basic video editing. | ||||

Topics will focus on personal skills and self-awareness, changes in the economic community that impact the music business, time management, resumes and interviews, operating your own business, the cultural environment and creativity, the impact of media on society, leadership, and the ongoing need to keep up with change. An intermediate hands-on audio post production course that utilizes audio software and video software. The 4 main areas of sound for picture are covered: dialog, sound effects, music and foley. Applications include audio production, video production, Internet delivery, broadcast, audio and video post production, sound design and multimedia. Term project(s) will be assigned. This course provides the knowledge and musical awareness needed to interact on a professional level in a recording scenario. The musicality of the recording, layering and mixing process is stressed throughout. Topics include the properties of sound, recognition of instruments and their performance methods, and technical audio ear training. Musical instruments will be covered with analysis of their individual properties, how they relate to each other and they can be altered and layered to create techniques to enhance a music production. A look at how processing affects the sonic structure of the sound. | ||||

This course exposes the student to a wide base of knowledge and develops skills to help prepare for a meaningful career in the music industry. Arranging, producing, organizing, promoting, and marketing 'Share the Land' concert will challenge the student with a practical real world community outreach project. Other topics will focus on personal skills and self-awareness, changes in the economic community that impact the music business, time management, resumes and interviews, operating your own business, the cultural environment and creativity, the impact of media on society, leadership, and the ongoing need to keep up with change. Guest lecturers will be brought in on a regular basis. | ||||
