This two-year diploma in accounting is designed to prepare graduates to work in an accounting environment at the entry or intermediate accounting level. This accounting diploma program starts with accounting fundamentals and then moves to detailed accounting principles and concepts, including computerized accounting. When you graduate, you’ll have the skills required for success in a corporate accounting department in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, merchandising, small business accounting, banks and other financial institutions.
You’ll also work in public accounting firms and federal, provincial and municipal government offices. This program is an ideal starting point for those seeking a career in accounting.
Graduates who meet admission requirements are also eligible for transfer to the Business Administration - Accounting Advanced Diploma or the Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) Degree. Available in a traditional in-class format with September, January, February and May admissions or as a fully online (asynchronous) business program, full-time or part-time. A co-op version of this program is also available.

Graduates of Fanshawe’s Business – Accounting program are prepared for a variety of entry-level positions in the public, private or not-for-profit sectors, including accounting assistant, junior accountant, staff accountant, bookkeeper, assistant controller, accounts payable and receivable clerk, billing administrator and tax practitioner.

- Senior Accountant (Analyst)
Support a charity’s analytical board by completing reconciliations, analyzing and investigating variances and coordinating monthly and year-end reports. - Tax Collector/Deputy Treasurer
Fulfill a municipality’s tax billing and collection process, prepare financial information and return of financial statements, facilitate the municipal payroll system and year-end audits. - Financial Analyst
Prepare journal entries and underlying schedules/sub-ledgers for accounts payable, monitor accounts payable to ensure balances are paid, assist with financial planning and analysis.

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to
1. record financial transactions in compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for sole proprietorships, partnerships, private enterprises, publicly accountable enterprises and non-profit organizations.
2. prepare and present financial statements, reports and other documents in compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for sole proprietorships, partnerships and private enterprises.
3. contribute to recurring decision-making by applying fundamental management accounting concepts.
4. prepare individuals’ income tax returns and basic tax planning in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
5. analyze organizational structures, the interdependence of functional areas, and the impact those relationships can have on financial performance.
6. analyze, within a Canadian context, the impact of economic variables, legislation, ethics, technological advances and the environment on an organization’s operations.
7. outline the elements of an organization’s internal control system and risk management.
8. contribute to recurring decision-making by applying fundamental financial management concepts.

English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:
- A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years. SDS Program Requirements.
- Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
- A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
- An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
- Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10
