Program Overview

This apprenticeship program is designed to give students the skills necessary to pursue an exciting and rewarding career as a professional hair stylist. As part of a supportive and nurturing environment, you’ll learn the essentials of the hair stylist profession, with classes in cutting and styling, hair colour and lightening, facials and makeup, and chemical texture services. When you graduate, you will have completed all of the classroom hours necessary for your trade certificate.

Your Learning Experience

Central to the program is the apprenticeship component where you’ll be able to work on real clients. As an apprentice, you’ll receive workplace-based training under the direction of experienced workers who can help you increase your earning power and expand your knowledge of the industry. After completing the apprenticeship and graduating, students can expect to gain employment in hair salons, and spas, and/or start their own business if they possess the entrepreneurial spirit. If you’re eager to get started as a hairstylist, the Apprenticeship program can help you on your way.

Admissions 

This is an apprenticeship program. You cannot apply to this program through ontariocolleges.ca. Applicants need a sponsor/employer. Your sponsor/employer must register you with:

Level 1
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
SFTY-1032Health & Safety-Level 12
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate safe working practices in the workplace and be able to perform sanitisation procedures according to related health legislation.
BUSI-1085Salon Functions-Level 13
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to perform routine salon functions by communicating with clients, colleagues and co-workers.
AEST-1036Hair & Scalp-Level 11
Upon successful completion of this course apprentices will be able to perform a scalp and head massage. The student will be able to perform a shampoo service, analysis the scalp and hair and recommend products for a salon service or for a home maintenance package. In addition, apprentices will be able to recognize common scalp and hair disorder and recommend appropriate treatments. Students will also have knowledge and practical experience in wet and thermal curl placement and styling.
AEST-1037Hair Cutting & Styling-Level 15
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to set and creatively style a client's hair using a variety of styling tools. They will also be able to recommend a haircut and style based on a client's profile and hair texture. The student will be able to perform a basic cut for women, men and children to meet the client's specifications.
AEST-1038Chemical Texture Services-Level 13
Upon successful completion of this course, the apprentice will be able to perform proper hair analysis for a chemical texture service. They will be able to explain and describe the physical and chemical actions that take place during permanent waving. Apprentices will be able to perform a basic permanent wave following manufacturer's directions.
AEST-1039Colour & Lightening Hair-Level 14
Upon successful completion of Level 1 Colour and Lightening Hair the apprentice will be able to apply to consult with a client and do simple colour formulations to meet clients expectations. They will be able to apply a temporary, semi permanent or permanent colour to the hair to either remove natural or artificial pigment. Apprentices will also be able to lighten, tone or do a bilevel colour or highlight using a variety of basic techniques.
