Your Learning Experience
In our travel courses, you’ll learn customer sales and service, travel business operations, travel systems software and emerging technology trends. Graduates are prepared to take the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) exam, widely recognized as the industry standard for travel advisors. Additionally, employers recognize that this program is officially endorsed by the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA). Upon graduation, students may choose to continue their studies by entering the second year of the Tourism - Travel diploma program.
Flexible learning options include online learning, with condensed courses and flexible start dates. During online learning, this program is being offered asynchronously. This means that learning occurs without teacher-led interaction, and on your own timetable. Tasks assigned such as reading, assignments, quizzes and others can be completed at any time prior to the due dates.
A part-time, online version of this program is also available
Career Information
Graduates of Fanshawe’s Tourism – Travel Studies program may find employment in the retail travel industry as travel advisors, home-based travel agents and independent consultants. Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge to adapt readily to positions in travel agencies, customer services roles and reservations.

Travel Advisor/Counsellor
Advise clients about suitable travel options in accordance with their needs, wants and capabilities. Recommend travel selections for cruises, tour packages, air travel and more. Provide professional services including; reservations, documentation requirements, and health and safety information.
Home Based Travel Agent and Independent Travel Advisor
Be your own boss, and work your own hours, and be supported by a travel agency business. Provide your clients with the customer service needed for a memorable vacation.
Learning Outcomes
- Ensure customer satisfaction by providing tourism products and services in an ethical and professional manner, both individually and as part of a team.
- Use marketing concepts, social networks, sales strategies, relationship management skills, and product knowledge to promote and sell tourism products, services, and customer experiences.
- Comply with relevant regulatory bodies and workplace systems, and identify risk management principles and policies to ensure safe and healthy tourism operations.
- Use appropriate technologies to enhance the quality and delivery of tourism products, services, and customer experiences.
- Identify and locate prominent travel destinations.
- Examine the relationship between current events and their impact on the world.
- Collect and analyze information for the preparation of travel itineraries, reports, and packages, and prepare and issue accurate travel documentation to clients.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and other travel agents as required in a culturally diverse and globalized business environment
- Develop ongoing personal professional development strategies and plans to enhance career opportunities.

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:- Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
- Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)

This course examines the geography of travel with respect to locations of principal countries, cities, as well as associated cultural and historical tourism attractions and activities. To successfully sell the experiences associated with key tourism destinations, essential destination knowledge is key. | ||||

All aspects of the travel industry rely heavily on the efficient and accurate use of the computer for data base retrieval and reservation booking. This course will introduce the student to the comprehensive and sophisticated VIASINC Travel Technology. | ||||

This course is designed to provide an overview of the areas of the tourism industry that act as tourism generators as well as the various supports that the tourism services sector provides. This course will develop students' professional writing skills for the travel industry. Students will produce a variety of documents appropriate for their workplaces. Tone, format, organization, and word choice are critical factors in these documents. Students will incorporate research, critical thinking, summarizing, and documenting. They will also address various communication challenges in a diverse workplace. |
