There is no doubt that exam season is stressful! However, it’s important to put a plan in place and set aside time to take care of yourself. Below are some helpful tips and links to set you up for a successful exam season! Is there anything you would add to this list? What resources do you find helpful?

1. Know your exam schedule - make use of a calendar (digital or paper) to ensure you have the correct date, time and location of your exam. The exam schedule is posted in Web Advisor.

2. Know your exam location – is your exam in-person or online? If in-person be sure to know the building and room number.

3. Understand your study style – do you work better alone in a quiet space, or would you benefit from a study group?  Make use of the Library Learning Commons and their study spaces.

4. Determine your study space – gather all necessary study materials (books, online articles, notes, PowerPoint slides, study guides) and have them available in your study space. Make sure it is clear of any unnecessary clutter. Check out how to declutter your desk to improve your mental health from Calm Blog.

5. Set a study schedule – create a schedule of what you want to accomplish each day – be specific and realistic. Learn how to set SMART goals:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

6. Take study breaks – taking breaks allows your body to re-charge, will improve your concentration and will help you retain information. Try this 5-minute guided meditation for your break.

7. Self-care – this is critical on a day-to-day basis but it’s even more important during exam season.  Yes, you are very busy however, setting aside 15-30 minutes every day for self-care will set you up for success.  Focus on the basics – sleep, include nutritious food items as much as possible, stay hydrated, move your body and connect with others.  Be realistic with your expectations and remind yourself that you are doing your best!  Check out this infographic on self-care 101!

8. Sleep – sleep plays a crucial role in learning and memory, so it’s important to prioritize getting adequate sleep every night.  So often we hear about ‘pulling an all-nighter’ – this is actually working against you because it decreases the brain’s ability to absorb and recall information.  Try turning off all screens at least 30 minutes before bed so your brain and body can prepare for rest.

9. Seek help – if you are struggling, know that help is available.  We have counsellors available to support you.  Counselling Services can be reached by calling 519-452-4282 or come by in person to F2010.  Within the community, there are crisis resources.

10. Celebrate - Be sure to celebrate your hard work - give yourself a pat on the back for doing your best!
