If you’re considering post-secondary, choosing the right course load and delivery options can help you fit learning into your lifestyle and complete it in the way that works for you. Luckily, there are multiple options for flexible learning when it comes to post-secondary education.
Part-time vs. Full-time
You may know that part-time requires a smaller weekly time commitment than full-time, but there are other important things to consider when choosing the best course load for you.
Full-time Studies
Studying at Fanshawe full-time means you'll take a full course load of four to six courses per semester, most of which will be determined by the program you choose to take, but you may also be required to take some electives to complete your credential. This course load will allow you to apply for OSAP as a full-time student (60 per cent or more of a full course load).
The typical credentials students earn with full-time course loads are Ontario College diplomas, advanced diplomas, degrees or graduate certificates. Full-time study is great when you want to focus most of your time on studying and fully immerse yourself in campus life, including meeting new people, joining clubs and participating in campus events. While many students choose to study full-time after graduating high school, many mature students, also known as non-traditional students, use full-time programs to retrain for a new career or upskill for their current career.
Part-Time Studies
Taking a Fanshawe program part-time means you’ll take between one and three courses per term. Earn an Ontario College Credential, Continuing Education Credentials or micro-credentials with the flexibility of studying part-time, including asynchronous and online delivery options. Many part-time programs are approved for OSAP. You’ll be considered part-time if you’re taking 20 to 59 per cent of a full course load. Be sure to check whether the program you’re considering is eligible for OSAP.
If you’re looking to boost your education without turning your routine upside down, consider taking a part-time program at Fanshawe. To learn more about our part-time options and flexibility, read What is Part-Time Learning?
Delivery Options
Online, Asynchronous
Many part-time programs are offered as online-only, asynchronous classes in order to be extremely flexible to fit your schedule. This means that you will be studying online in an unscheduled format. You decide how to allocate your weekly course time allotment to work within your schedule. You'll need to be sure to actively participate in the course each week.
Online, Synchronous
All classes are scheduled and attended online.
In-Person Classes
All classes are scheduled and require in-person attendance to meet the learning requirements.
Blended Learning
Also known as hybrid learning, these classes combine in-person and online learning. The online portion is asynchronous (unscheduled), while the in-person component is scheduled, typically in the evenings.
