Entrance scholarships, awards, bursaries and other entrance opportunities support post-secondary students entering a new program. While many of these opportunities are available, students may not be aware of them or find it challenging to find the ones they are eligible for. So, what is an entrance scholarship, and how can you get one?
Entrance scholarships and other entrance awards
Entrance scholarships and awards differ from other awards because they specifically support students entering the first term of a new program. Eligibility for entrance scholarships, bursaries and awards may also include additional criteria. Entrance awards can help you get a headstart on funding your college journey, so knowing what awards you’re eligible for is essential.

Things to consider when applying for entrance scholarships
Where to find entrance scholarships, bursaries and awards
Most colleges and other post-secondary institutions offer information about financial aid and awards opportunities on their website. Typically, these are specific to that institution, so it’s good to consider what entrance scholarships and awards might be available to you before you apply.

Eligibility for entrance scholarships, bursaries and awards
How will you know if you qualify for an entrance scholarship or other opportunity? While these scholarships are for students entering the first term of a program at Fanshawe, they may also have other criteria. Some scholarships focus on program enrollment, while others consider financial need (see definition below), support equity-deserving groups, recognize those who have overcome challenges, reward academic excellence, or combine several of these criteria.
Terms to Know
Here are some common terms in the eligibility criteria and descriptions for entrance scholarships and other opportunities.
- “Students Enrolling in” an eligible program are people who have applied, confirmed an offer or paid their deposit for a qualified program for that award.
- A student “entering the first term of the program” has confirmed an offer to an eligible program or paid their deposit. - Applicants with “financial need” are students who demonstrate that they require additional resources to meet their education and living expenses.
- A student who is “enrolled in” an eligible program is someone who has confirmed an offer of admission, paid required funds and is currently attending that program.

Should I apply for entrance opportunities if…
I haven’t decided if I’m going to attend Fanshawe yet. Can I still apply?
Yes! Once you’ve applied to Fanshawe, you can and should apply for an entrance opportunity, even if you’re not sure if you’ll attend. Funds won’t be released until you attend Fanshawe. Still, if you're awarded the scholarship, you can use that money to fund your journey if you choose Fanshawe (and we might be biased, but we think you should!).
I’ve applied to Fanshawe, but haven’t received an offer yet. Should I still apply?
Yes! If you receive your offer and choose to attend Fanshawe and you’ve already applied for the scholarship, you’ll be one step ahead. If you're awarded the scholarship, funds aren’t released until you attend.
Be prepared to pay your deposit (and any previous outstanding balance) with money other than your entrance scholarship, even if the scholarship indicates it will go toward your tuition. Funds aren’t released until you’re attending Fanshawe, so they won’t be available when you need to pay your deposit.
