Program Overview

Automotive Service Technician is a two-year Ontario College Certificate Apprenticeship program. Students will learn how to diagnose, repair and maintain engines. Students will have the opportunity to specialize in an area of automotive service. Graduates will feel confident entering the workforce after applying their skills and knowledge in an apprenticeship component.

Your Learning Experience

The technology within automobiles is changing every year. Vehicles are technological marvels that use computers to make them run properly and smoothly. These vehicles need highly trained mechanics with specialized skills to keep people safe on the road.  The Automotive Service Technician (Day Release) will help you gain these specialized skills to drive your career forward.

 

Students will learn to diagnose, repair and maintain engines and many electrical and electronic systems in cars, trucks and buses. Additionally, students have the opportunity to specialize in engines and fuel systems, electrical and electronic systems, suspension or brakes. The apprenticeship component of the program allows students to test their skills in the real world, on real vehicles.

This is an apprenticeship program. You cannot apply to this program through ontariocolleges.ca. Applicants need a sponsor/employer. Your sponsor/employer must register you with:

This course will enable the students to gain an understanding of the purpose, construction and operating principles of fasteners, bearings, seals and sealants as applied to the automotive industry. The student will also gain an understanding of the purpose, construction and operating principles of precision measuring tools as well as oxyacetylene, heating and cutting tools.

This course will enable the students to: explain the operating characteristics of internal combustion engines, perform engine disassembly/reassembly procedures according to accepted industry standards, explain the construction and operating principles of cylinder block assembly components, perform recommended inspection/testing of cylinder block and components and explain recommended rebuilding procedures, explain the operation of crankshafts and bearings and perform recommended inspection/measuring procedures.

This course will enable the students to gain an understanding of the purpose, construction and operating principles of electrical fundamentals, circuits and components as applied to the automotive industry. The student will also gain an understanding of the purpose, construction and operating principles of fuel systems.

This course will provide an in-depth study of the design features, operating principles, static and dynamic test procedures of power transmission and driveline systems. The student will also learn to evaluate system problems logically, describe and perform service repair operations.
MVMC-1040Suspension, Steering & Brakes Systems2.5
This course will enable the students to gain an understanding of the purpose and principles of operation of a vehicles suspension, steering and braking systems components. As well the student will gain a working knowledge of test equipment and service repair procedures.
