This course will introduce business students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.

This course is designed to provide an overview of the decisions that face Marketers in today's fast-paced and competitive business environment. Students will learn that marketing is not only advertising but a broad set of activities designed to satisfy consumer needs and wants. Students examine the information Marketers require for effective decision-making and learn the basic elements of the marketing planning process.

This course provides a review of basic arithmetic and algebra as well as providing students with mathematical tools and concepts needed for other college courses and in future employment. This course is to prepare students for later courses in Marketing, Business, Financial Planning, Accounting, Purchasing and Insurance.

This course will serve as an introduction to software applications commonly used by the Human Resources professional. Fundamental computing applications to be covered include Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access. Students will also be introduced to Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) and software applications used for collaboration such as OneDrive and web-based MS Office tools.
FINA-1004Finance 13
A general education course developed to provide students with the fundamental financial life skills so that they can make educated financial management decisions over the course of their lifetime. The emphasis is on those financial life skills that are of particular relevance in the early stages of the financial management life cycle.

This course will introduce students to the role of the human resources professional in the field of human resources management. Topics such as job analysis, training and development, recruitment and selection, health and safety, planning, performance management, employment legislation and career development, with additional functional areas of human resources will be presented. This course develops students' literacy and professional communication skills. Students focus on current business issues and convey relevant meaning in oral and written format. The main themes of the course include writing reports and other relevant business documents (e.g. letters, short reports); communicating in groups and meetings; awareness of intercultural communication and diverse audiences; the job search (including resumes and cover letters); business; business rhetoric in speaking and writing; summarizing and evaluating current business-related readings; delivering presentations; researching and documenting reports using APA format; and self-editing skills.

This course covers the concepts, skills, and techniques for running effective business meetings and makingeffective presentations. Course material covered is applicable to all business sectors and audiences of all types and sizes. Emphasis is placed on learning appropriate strategies and multi-media techniques and applying them toindividual and group work assignments with business and non-business topics. Students learn to effectively incorporate computer applications like PowerPoint and digital media tools into business meetings and presentations. Students develop life-long strategies for dealing with presentation anxiety and stress.

Students will learn the basics of payroll practices and procedures, including an overview of the payroll function, employment standards, earnings, taxable benefits, pension plans, employment insurance, taxation, calculating net pay, and all current periodic/annual reporting requirements. Excel software will be used throughout the course.

This course will assist the student in developing skills in recruitment, interviewing and orientation. Other topics will include learning the best methods for attracting potential employees, selecting people, establishing criteria for hiring, conducting the screening process, and evaluating application forms, letters and resumes. Students in this course will acquire and learn to apply the knowledge and skills necessary to work successfully in any organization. Organizational, team and individual relationships and processes and their impact on organizational outcomes will provide the framework for the course. Within this framework, various topics, including theories of organizational behaviour, decision making, communication, motivation, leadership, values, emotion, conflict, negotiation and perception, will be examined. Students will complete a personality assessment and relate their results to course concepts. Students will be required to design and facilitate a training session in class. LAWS-1052Employment Law3
Students in this course are introduced to Canadian employment law and its relationship with human resources management. The focus will be on current federal and provincial legislation affecting the non-unionized environment. The Canadian legal framework will be reviewed, including statutory and common law and the judicial system. The legal context of the entire employment relationship from hiring to ending the relationship and beyond will be examined. From an assigned case, students will predict a case outcome using statutory and common law and their own interpretation of the facts of the case.

This course focuses on preparing the students to work in a Human Resources role within an organization. They will also learn practical tools for securing and succeeding in a future job. These tools will include writing effective resume and cover letters and developing an effective career portfolio with a Human Resources focus. The students will also learn effective interviewee and interviewer skills, professional document use, policy awareness and use, intercultural awareness, research on the HR profession jobs and vocational requirements, dressing and dining skills, Further, weekly, throughout the course, students will demonstrate proficiency in group dynamics as well as individually akin to an HR team in the workforce.
ECON-1002Economics 13
Economics I is an introductory microeconomics course which covers a broad curriculum of microeconomic principles. Students will study the foundations of economic choice, market pricing, consumer behaviour, business decision making, market structure and policy development in a small open economy like Canada.
COMP-3077Excel for Business Adv3
Modern spreadsheet programs perform far beyond simple number crunching. The functionality of Microsoft Excel continues to move the application into new venues such as visual interactive data presentations or sales proposals. Given the now commonplace nature of the program, it is crucial that all business minded professionals have a comprehensive knowledge of MS Excel. Upon successful completion of this curriculum, students will be trained in MS Excel for MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) expert level Excel certification. MOS testing is available at certified testing centers across Canada.

In this course students will develop a clear understanding of the interpersonal, resolution and problem-solving skills needed by Human Resources professionals in both a unionized and non-unionized environment. This course will focus on the knowledge and application of effective techniques to manage employee issues, apply problem solving strategies in a situational environment, and explore theoretical concepts and investigative techniques for resolving conflict. Emphasis will be placed on the interpersonal skills needed to resolve employee issues and developing a foundation of conflict resolution options, including the use of group facilitation methods and building a collaborative environment when managing conflict.

Students in this course will be exposed to various types of performance appraisal strategies and processes. Topics include determining skill sets required for various jobs, performance indicators and measures, setting goals and objectives, facilitating performance improvements, addressing poor performance, wrongful dismissal, probationary review, progressive discipline, and termination.

This course will provide students with an understanding of the process, issues, and techniques involved in administering a compensation system. Students will learn both the theoretical and applied aspects of the compensation function; the linkage between the compensation function and the organizational management process; and the compensation system design necessary to attract, retain and motivate the required workforce. Topics include responsibilities of firms and employees, economic impact of loss control, ergonomics, workplace hazards assessment, accident prevention, workplace violence and harassment, WHMIS, WSIB Act, and the Occupational Health & Safety Act of Ontario. MGMT-1197Human Resources Mentorship2.6
In this course students apply the skills and knowledge gained over three semesters to the mentorship experience. In this mentor-led learning opportunity, students will either shadow an onsite HR mentor or participate in interactive discussions in the online section. In the online section students will create policies and forms in regards to the employee life cycle from hiring through to termination. A few guest speakers will lead some of these discussions. The course prepares students to enter the workforce by reinforcing the responsibilities and expectations of an entry-level human resources professional and providing networking opportunities in the business community. The HR Mentorship will meet the experiential learning requirements of mandatory contact hours with professionals in the field of human resources; any student not meeting this mandatory requirement will not be eligible to pass the course, regardless of course evaluation submission grades.

This course examines the effect of change in organizations and the challenges with organizational development. Topics include strategies for implementing change effectively and dealing with resistance to change, the role of culture and learning in the organization and how OD interventions can facilitate change and innovation.
INNV-1001Innovation Applications3
Organizations and individuals need to be innovative to succeed in the complex and rapidly-changing global marketplace. In this course you will learn the fundamentals of innovation and how innovation applies to your discipline or field.Using this foundational knowledge, you will apply the novel and adaptive thinking processes and tools presented in the course to complete an innovative learning project in collaboration with other students.The project will be based on a real-world scenario with a defined scope as chosen by your professor. The project may involve external live clients and a multi-disciplinary approach.Throughout the course, novel and adaptive thinking skills as well as collaboration skills will be evaluated through self assessment.This course is designed to give students in certificate and diploma programs a foundation in innovative thinking.

SFTY-3010Occupational Health & Safety Legislation3
This course will provide students with an analytical understanding of current provincial and federal health & safety legislation and its application and implications in the workplace. Topics include WHMIS, WSIA, Canada Labour Code, AODA, Occupational Health and Safety Act, roles and functions of health and safety committees and representatives and an understanding of duties and responsibilities of various stakeholders. A strategic perspective will be utilized to explain the necessity for safety compliance and the importance of due diligence when facing an investigation. The implications of prosecution will also be discussed.

To keep pace with changing technology and enhanced managerial responsibilities, the human resources professional must be proficient in both statistical analysis and the assessment of data generated from human resources. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of statistics. It includes data analysis using descriptive measures, probabilities and distributions, sampling, statistical estimation, hypotheses testing, simple linear regression and correlation. It will also prepare the student for the use of computerized data analysis program (EXCEL) and Human Resource Information System (HRIS) in the future.

This course will provide the student with a platform which to base both business and personal decision making within the context of various moral and ethical principles. Topics include the relationship between business and society, theoretical bases for ethical decision making, ethical capitalism and relativism, regulating business, stakeholder relations and marketplace ethics. The relationship between business and the environment will also be explored, with particular emphasis on corporate social responsibility and sustainability.

This course is designed to expand and strengthen student knowledge and application of conflict resolution strategies in a business context. In this course, students will focus on skill mastery and developing a more resourceful understanding of appropriate techniques for resolving disputes between two or more parties. Emphasis will be placed on strategic preparation when using various non-adversarial approaches, moving from positions to interests and building a collaborative environment when resolving disputes.

The study of labour relations provides the backdrop for understanding the relationships between management, union, the government, the public and other stakeholders. Students will learn to develop strategies to contribute to organizational effectiveness through good employee and labour relations. The historical, environmental, constitutional and legislative framework will provide the foundation for an in-depth examination of the modern Canadian labour relations experience. Union recognition and the collective agreement, its content and its negotiation will be examined in detail. Considering that one in every five employees in Canada works in the public sector, special attention will also be paid to public sector unions. This course covers a systemic approach to designing activities and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe and healthy workplace. Students will learn how to implement an effective safety program. This course examines proper accident investigation and reporting, audits, inspections, safety committees, orientations, safe work procedures, elimination of hazards and policy development and implementation. A specific focus will include the development of effective safety programs with the goal of reducing accidents and illness in the workplace.

This course will provide students with an understanding of hazard management concepts in occupational health and safety. A strategic approach to hazard recognition, assessment and control will be analyzed and various risk management techniques will be discussed. Several behavioural principles will be considered when identifying management techniques that will help foster the development of a sustainable and effective safety culture.

This is an introductory macroeconomics course. Students will study measures of macroeconomic activity, growth in the economy and the government's role in stabilizing the economy.

This course will provide practical theories for the successful development, implementation and evaluation of projects and events to meet the strategic and operational goals/objectives of a business. Students will be introduced to a variety of principles, practices, tools and resources they can use to manage Human Resources Projects within an organization.

The course will introduce students to a variety of leadership theories and theorists. Students will identify and analyze individual leadership issues and how they impact organization culture, change and learning. Students will be able to delineate between management and leadership, analyze gender issues in leadership and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches. Students will also complete various leadership self-assessment evaluations in to determine their personal management and leadership style and find new inventive ways to improve their skills.

The project will be based on a real-world scenario identified in consultation with your professor. The project may involve an external live client and a multi-disciplinary approach. This course is designed to give students in advanced diploma programs the opportunity apply innovative thinking to a real-world problem that they select.

This course provides students with the opportunity to help real organizations in our local community solve problems or realize opportunities. Community Consultants is a business consultancy service operated by Fanshawe's Lawrence Kinlin School of Business. The consultancy gives students the opportunity to gain real-world employability skills and to build a portfolio. The course gives clients the opportunity to add value to their organization while contributing to the community. The enrollment in this course is limited and restricted to face-to-face students in the fall in-take. Students must successfully apply to receive a consultancy position.
