Are the February blues getting you down?  It’s about that time of the season when we feel like we're done with snow and ready for warmer weather. Here are a few ways you can shrug off the February blues through this cold and bitter season:

1. Keep up with physical activity

Physical activity releases natural endorphins and helps boost your mood. If you’ve been consistent with physical activity and you’re starting to get bored, try pairing your routine with a new playlist filled with your favourite songs. Plus, check out the Student Wellness Centre for classes, sports and more!

2. Play games with family or friends

During the winter months, it's easy to fall into the habit of staying inside and keeping work, but that could be adding even more blah to your February blues. That’s why it’s so important to try to stay connected. Schedule a board game night or even a weekly cards night. If your friends and family are a little far or hard to get to in the snow, why not switch things up a little and play a virtual board game? Many video chat apps have built-in games play while you’re chatting with friends and family members. Schedule your next virtual board game night ahead of time and have some fun!

3. Perform random acts of kindness

Not only will you make someone feel better about their February blues, but you’ll also feel great knowing that you put a smile on that someone’s face. Even the simplest of gestures is sure to brighten anyone’s day. Order some flowers for a friend or drop treats off on someone’s doorstep.

4. Freshen up your surroundings

Since we tend to spend more time inside during the winter, why not freshen up the space you live in? It doesn’t have to be extravagant or an expensive project at all – simply putting up more photos of friends and family is sure to brighten up your space and make you smile as you reminisce about all the good times. Even adding an arrangement of fresh flowers to a table or buying a new houseplant will make you feel great…a little “spring” inspiration and a visual reminder that warmer weather is just around the corner.

5. Dance, sing or listen to music

Dancing and singing can be great mood boosters. Research has shown that music and sound can affect our mood and mental state, so even just listening to calming music or nature sounds can have a positive effect.

6. Embrace the season

If none of the above work for you, you know what they say – if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!  Go for a walk in the winter wonderland or check out different winter activities, like skiing or skating, that are running in your community.
