A part-time, online (asynchronous) offering for this program is available.
Human Resources Management is a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program designed for university or college graduates, providing them with functional knowledge in core areas of human resources. Beyond the core curriculum, the program also offers courses in software, Canadian employment law, management of strategic HR projects and professional communications.
You’ll also have the opportunity to apply to further develop your consulting skills with the option of substituting two courses for the intensive community consultancy program, working with live clients to solve real problems.
This program includes all nine credits required for the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) and Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designations from the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA).

English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:
- A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 88 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.5 with no score less than 6.0 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years. SDS Program Requirements.
- Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 70 with no score less than 60 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 59, with test results within the last two years
- A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 176 with no language skill less than 169, with test results within the last two years
- An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 75% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
- Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9 or 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

- Introductory accounting (e.g., complete ACCT-1004 - Principles of Accounting I offered by Fanshawe College either through the Lawrence Kinlin School of Business or Part-Time Studies)
- Computer applications, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Mathematics (e.g., complete MATH-1052 - Business Math offered by Fanshawe College either through the Lawrence Kinlin School of Business or Part-Time Studies)

- Applicants may apply for advanced standing on the basis of previous academic achievement at another institution and/or Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). Advanced standing qualifies the applicant for direct entry to a second or higher level of the program.

This course will introduce students to the role of the human resources professional in the field of human resources management. Topics such as job analysis, training and development, recruitment and selection, planning, performance management, employment legislation and career development, with additional functional areas of human resources will be presented. Through lectures, laptop instruction, teamwork, self-assessments and experiential exercises, students will be exposed to the human resources management field in the business environment. This course is HRPA approved and is required to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 1 (CKE1) and/or the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 2 (CKE2). These exams are part of the attainment of the externally accredited entry level Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation (CKE1) and/or the advanced level Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation (CKE2), respectively. Students will learn how to develop, implement, and evaluate training needs and training programs. In addition, students will learn about the importance of training and development as a strategic approach to improved productivity, efficiency and effectiveness in the organization. Students will be required to design and facilitate a training session in class. MGMT-6042 | Organizational Performance | 3 | ||
Students in this course will gain an advanced understanding of how organizational effectiveness is dependent upon the interactions and relationships between individuals and teams within organizations. The content is based on theoretical models, the research underpinning these models and how these translate into the contemporary Canadian workplace. The course will examine topics ranging from employee motivation and performance management to organizational structure, culture, development and change. Students will explore topics around the role of individual values, perception and decision making and how these can influence team dynamics and leadership. Students will complete a personality assessment and relate their results to course concepts. Students will also undertake a major case analysis applying course concepts. MGMT-6043 | Recruitment Strategy & Selection | 3 | ||
This course will assist the student in the development and evaluation of the recruitment strategy including areas such as recruitment, interviewing and the orientation process. Other topics will include learning the best methods to develop and implement advertising strategies to attract potential candidates. Students will learn how to develop selection processes as well as use valid assessment tools to establish valid criteria for hiring. Students will also develop strategies to align recruitment and selection with the goals of the organization. This course focuses on refining and advancing students workplace communication abilities. The advanced communication documents and strategies covered include presentation skills, research skills, business document writing, meeting and management team strategies, business etiquette, and advanced employment communications. To keep up with the fast pace of changing technology and enhanced managerial responsibilities, Human Resource (HR) professionals are required to be highly efficient in the use of both computer software applications and Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) or Human Capital Management systems (HCM). Strong Excel skills are essential for the analysis and presentation of data from an HRIS. This course will cover Excel to an expert level. | ||||
MGMT-6045 | Canadian Labour Relations | 3 | ||
This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of the history, development, operation and future of Canadian labour relations. It examines the political and social context in which labour, employers, the government and society function. The course provides the framework in which HR professionals will be working in contemporary unionized environments. Through exploring concepts, case studies and practical applications, the course will take the student through the process and issues of union organization and certification to the complexities of collective bargaining and the administration of the collective agreement. The course will offer a closer look at public sector unions, the nature of the labour management relationship and contemporary issues.
