Preparing for a job fair
Job fairs are an underused resource that can be a great way to look for work. It is also excellent practice for you before getting to an actual interview. It’s a great way for you to get to know companies you may not even know exist, and an even better way to meet the hiring people for the companies you really want to work for.
In 2022, a lot of job fairs are happening online; but whether it’s in person or virtual, there are a few things to keep in mind when attending a job fair:
Continue to nurture the connection
If you get their contact information, follow up with an email and/or find them on LinkedIn. Make the connection beyond the job fair and they will remember you better.
Quick research can go a long way
Do some quick research on the company before you get to the booth. Connect to the company website so you can spend more time talking about what you can do for their company, instead of them explaining what the company does. Most job fairs have specific positions listed, so do your research and look prepared and ready to impress.
Dress for success
You don’t need to wear a suit, but it makes a positive impression when you aren’t wearing a tracksuit and/or ball cap. A button-down shirt, or blouse, and a pair of pressed dress pants go a long way. It shows that you care about making a professional impression.
Be at the job fair earlier in the day
Remember, The Early Job Seeker Gets the Worm! It gives you a better chance of getting their undivided attention, rather than at the end of the fair where they may only have a few minutes to share with you.
Smile
Honestly, nothing impresses more than talking with a smiling face that looks like they are enjoying the conversation. Even if you aren’t feeling it, fake it (that’s a life skill you will need to develop, so go ahead and practice).
Be confident approaching the booth.
It’s another “fake it till you feel it” life skill. They won’t bite, and they are there to let people know that their company exists. They wouldn’t be here if they didn’t want to interact with people so don’t be shy, they are thrilled to speak with you.
