Now, more than ever, online learning is becoming a standard in post-secondary education. Whether it’s FanshaweOnline courses or online classes through a different institution, you’ll want to make sure you’re prepared to be successful in the online learning environment.

Here are 10 helpful tips to support your online learning success.

1. Be aware of your learning style and be versatile.

Understand how you learn so you’re able to prepare and adapt to the online learning environment. There are many assessment tools available online that will help you determine what your learning style is and provide tips and techniques that will benefit you.

2. Choose a place to study that is free from distractions.

Find a place that is free from outside distractions, like crowds of people or loud noises. Make sure you’re comfortable and that you have a desk or table to work from, a chair for proper posture and ample lighting.

3. Create a schedule for your online learning.

Schedule your time, making note of when you will study throughout the day and when you will work on specific assignments. Make sure you note due dates in your calendar for every online course you’re taking.

4. Prioritize learning tasks and keep your work organized.

Which assignments are due first? Which require more time to complete? Prioritize your studying to make sure you complete assignments by their deadlines. It’s also helpful to organize your work with a file folder system that works for you, so you can keep track of your progress and ensure you can find things easily when you need them.

5. Have a plan for when technology challenges you.

Make sure you have someone you can contact if you run into problems with your technology. For FanshaweOnline courses, our IT Service Desk helps our students with most issues, but it may also be helpful to find a friend or family member who is good with technology as a backup.

6. Learn how your online course technology works.

When you start your online classes, take some time to learn the required technology early. This could include figuring out how quiz and test functions work as well as where and how to upload and submit assignments online.

7. Log in frequently to review course material and marks.

Logging in often and learning the material in smaller chunks is easier than trying to digest material after long stretches of time. It’s also important to review your assignment and test results to check that you’re not falling behind in your online learning.

8. Build rapport with your instructor and online classmates.

Make sure you stay in contact with your instructor, ask questions and participate in online discussions. Not only will this enrich your online learning experience, but it will be beneficial if you need help down the road. Make sure you communicate early if you’re struggling so you can get the assistance you need to succeed.

9. Don’t forget about ‘netiquette’ when communicating online.

In an online environment, it’s easy to misinterpret tone or meaning in a message. This happens more often than not and it’s important to realize that it’s okay to disagree, but not be disagreeable.

10. Utilize the supports and services available to you.

If you’re facing challenges in your online classes, take advantage of the supports that are put in place to ensure your success. Your school and instructor want to see you succeed, so be sure to get help right away if you need it.
